Your Destiny Counts Mentoring Objective

Your Destiny Counts is a nonprofit organization providing mentoring programs to help young girls and

adolescence in the Portsmouth area. The program will form partnerships with local school districts and

the juvenile court systems to assist them in becoming productive citizens. Your Destiny Counts’ goal is

to foster a commitment to this population of women to promote pro-social friendships, strong

interpersonal skills, and reassert a sense of hope in the future. Only through personal relationships can a

sense of individual responsibility be re-established that will give the commitment to follow through on

path of adulthood with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

This program is geared toward young girls and women who are subject to repeat classroom failures, the

development of destructive habits, at-risk young people and struggling young women who are seeking

help to get back on track, to build on their self-esteem and become self-sufficient. Those who have lost

faith in the system, and the possibilities that await them if they are successful in putting their lives

together. Those who are falling through the cracks in schools or those who are already entangled with

the juvenile court systems. There are those in our communities fighting the demons of sexual and

domestic violence, homelessness, hunger and poverty.

To accomplish this goal we have implemented this program to identify youths who are having

tempestuous transitions to adulthood by offering positive support system to prevent the difficulties that

can derail their lives. Our plans are to communicate with other institutions who work with female youths

and adolescents to identify those who continue slipping back because of lack of resources; those trying

to get their lives back from domestic violence, or just getting out of prison, etc. to attain goals. The focus

is slightly different at each level but the goal remains the same; empowering women to make positive

changes in his/her life.

Your Destiny Counts will focus primarily on providing mentor-ship to young girls and adolescents to

prepare them for transition to another level of their lives. This level of transition will allow them to

develop a more positive attitude toward education and good citizenry.
